Stardust Butterfly v1.1 release!
Hello!
I've been slowly updating and adjusting the game, and am finally ready to release v1.1!
If you've already printed out v1.0, don't worry! I included a v1.1 update file that only includes the updated cards.
As of this post, the Digital version has not been updated to v1.1, nor do I expect it to be. However, the .pcio and print-and-play files are up-to-date, and I expect the virtual tabletop version on the public library to be updated soon. Here are the highlights:
- Adjusted Assist actions for each character!
This is to help out a bit with balance. Sumiv's assist now requires players to pay her 2cc to activate, which gives her some money to work with if she ever wants to enlist help from the other players. Gloz's assist now lets players take up to 3 of her weapons instead of just 1, which makes it easier to disrupt her goal. Jebbrey's assist now costs 2cc instead of 3cc, which means it's easier to use his assist when you have no money and Jebbrey potentially hordes less money.
- 3 new Event cards!
There is 1 new Event card for each level to add a little more variety to the game. The First Event "Breaking News!" will give each player free research. The Second Event "Team-Building Exercise" forces players to share a weapon, a contracted target, or even a die. The Final Event "Careless Dereliction" will punish players for having leftover contracted targets.
- Updated and clarified rules and card effects!
For the most part, the basic rules have remained the same. The only updates have been adding missing aspects in the rules (can't believe I forgot to explain what research does in v1.0) and clarifying how effects trigger (on a successful hit, you do the following in this exact order: gain points, discard research, perform any target "on success" effect, discard target) as some of the new card effects might cause confusion without it.
I added more target effects, by the way! There are a few that give benefits on a failure, some that require you to discard a resource to gain the full amount of RP, one that limits the number of dice you can roll, and one that has research increase their capture number (instead of decrease). The most interesting one imo is Dealbreaker Jones's new effect, which forces you to give the target to the next player after you capture him, giving that player the chance to also get 10RP.
- Updated graphic design (kinda)
This applies only to the print-and-play version. When I would play the printed version, I noticed players forgetting about the Planet Bonus, so I put a clear reminder on the Starmap. Also, it was difficult to know what the other's characters' assist actions were without constantly asking, so on the character sheets I put the other player's assist actions instead of their own.
And that's about it I think! I don't expect to update the game anymore in the near future, unless I see a typo or something. I've considered making the weapon deck a little more interesting, or adding more targets, or even increasing the length of the game from 6 rounds to 9 rounds, but I don't think I'll do that because I like how short the game is, and I think messing with the weapon deck would make the game a little too complex.
Since I haven't really made a game jam post-mortem, I might post one in the future, mostly talking about the (non-canon) lore I had in mind and maybe pointing out some of the more obscure references I slipped into the game, so watch out for that! I'm also hoping to update the tutorial videos to use the pnp version (both for Stardust Butterfly and Scrappet Kaiser Princess) and put together a gameplay video of the .vtio version of Stardust Butterfly. Ever since the game jam ended it's been pretty difficult to get two other friends to join my weekly private game nights. Ah well.
Oh, to explain what Virtual Tabletop/vtio is: It's an open source version of PlayingCards.io. If you go to VirtualTabletop.io, there is a public library of a ton of different board game mods that you can try, and Stardust Butterfly and Scrappet Kaiser Princess are now part of that (and those were ported over by LawDawg)! Pretty exciting. In my opinion, that version (of SB) is better than the .pcio version because you can roll your entire dice pool with just one button instead of clicking each individual die. So check it out!
Well, that's it for now. Until next time!
